Class 5

I have been overwhelmed with the effort Year 5 have put into their half term homework! The variety was absolutely fantastic: from presentations to games to fact files! Amazing!

After looking at how materials dissolve, the children experimented with different ways to separate mixtures. They had great fun testing filtration, sieving, magnet attraction and evaporation!

HALF TERM HOMEWORK!

For homework for the upcoming half term, the children have been asked to be creative! Their task is to do anything related to what we have covered this half term, particularly Ancient Greece. This could include making something, cooking something, filming something, making a photo album, writing a newspaper or story – it is completely up to the children! This homework will be due in on Friday 8th June to give those away for half term the chance to complete it.

Year 5 began their Ancient Greece topic with placing where Ancient Greece fits in a timeline of events. Afterwards, they had a great time debating the different forms of government that were used in the Ancient Greek city states, ranging from democracy through to tyranny!

Oaker Wood presentation for parents

We had a visit from a REAL VIKING today! The children learned about the Viking weapons and battle tactics - with some brave volunteers! They were taught a Viking board game called ''Hnefatafl", a lot of information about the Viking gods and what they believed in. The day finished with a funeral complete with procession fit for a king! A big thanks to Hrothgar for such a fabulous day!

Forest School - Year 5 started Forest School this half term and have thoroughly enjoyed being in the great outdoors and building some fantastic things!

PE with Tom - the children learned some fantastic agility skills this week.

Year 5 have done some awesome work with Scratch and have used this knowledge with Lego We-Do to build something, e.g. a crocodile, and code it to move. Their crocodiles snapped their jaws shut whenever a stray finger went near! They will continue to hone their debugging skills with the Lego We-Do for the rest of the term.

Poetry based on The Day The Crayons Quit

With book focus on The Day The Crayons Quit, the children wrote some fantastic poetry - drafting, editing and writing a final piece - and were given the opportunity to perform these poems.

Welcome to Year 5!

We are now into the fifth week of term and the children have integrated superbly into their new environment.

They have rocketed through maths showing me their abilities from number and place value, to addition and subtraction. We aim to consolidate this further before heading towards multiplication and division - PARENTS: Please practise times tables with your child to help give them a kick start!

Year 5 have written some lovely poetry based on our book theme of The Day The Crayons Quit, and will be performing these shortly.

More to follow soon!
